Previously known as Juvenile diabetes, this type of diabetes is diagnosed in children and young adults <40 years of age. 10% of all diabetics are type 1. It is an autoimmune condition in which body attacks against its own insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is the hormone required for proper utilization of glucose in our body. In type 1 diabetes, there is total absence of insulin as a result of which glucose cannot be used by muscles and other cells of the body, excess glucose remains in the blood. Blood glucose level is high but patient feels weak and tired as muscles cannot use this glucose. In type 1 diabetes, the only treatment option is insulin injections
