Three types of test are used to diagnose diabetes

  • Fasting Plasma Glucose:     <100mg/dl  = normal , 100-126 mg/dl = prediabetes >126 mg/dl   =  Diabetes 
  • Impaired glucose tolerance:   (taken 2 hours after oral glucose load) <140 mg/dl = normal 140-200 mg/dl = prediabetes >200mg/dl  = Diabetes
  • HbA1c  (glycocylated hemoglobin):  average value of blood sugar over a period of 3 months 4.5-5.5 = normal 5.6-6.5 = prediabetes >6.5   =  diabetes   HbA1c is now accepted as an independent diagnostic criteria for diabetes according to 2011 WHO guidelines.
